    The Delcaration of Independence was written by five men, including Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. The document was signed in 1776, on July 4th.

    The Constitution was ratified in 1789, when New Hampshire became the last of the nine states needed to make the Constitution the law of the land.

    The expedition started in 1804, with the intent to search for river routes to the western ocean, make contact with the Native Americans in the territory, and gather information about the territory. It filled in many of the details about the West by the end in 1806.

    The US went up against Great Britain in an attempt to expand their territory and have better trade access. This war was celebrated as the "second war of independence" for the US.

    Missouri requested to become a slave state in 1819, which would distrupt the balance between slave states and anti slave states. The compromise was drawing a line between the states that can be free states and the states that can be slave states.

    Texas declared independence after the end of the Texas Revolution, which lasted six months. After that, the Republic of Texas was formed.
  • Trail of Tears

    In 1838, more than 15,000 Cherokee Indian's traveled on foot to Oklahoma, forced by the United States Army. They were forced to leave their territory so that Georgia could seize the land for gold. 1 in 4 Cherokee Indian's died of cold or disease.

    Started when Mexico broke relations with the US, a dispute between where the border between the US and Mexico lay, the war started in 1846. The US defeated Mexico, and Mexico created the Treaty of Guadalupa Hildelgo, which accepted the US's border terms and gave New Mexico and California to the US.

    Gold Rush in California
    The mass immigration to California began in 1848 due to the discovery of great amounts of gold. People would leave their homes and move to California in hopes of finding gold and becoming rich. By 1848, over 14,000 people were residents in California.
  • Compromise of 1850

    The issue of territorial slavery arose again in 1849 due to the admission of California in the US as a free state. The Compromise of 1850 was created, which abolished slave trade in DC, created the Fugitive Slave Act, and allowed New Mexico and Utah to decide on being a free or slave state.

    The act created “popular sovereignty” in the US, that allowed settlers to determine if the state was going to be a slave state or not. This act overturned the original Missouri Compromise.

    Completion of the transcontinental railroad construction. The railroad stretched coast to coast and was a big factor to the Union's victory in the Civil War.

    The end of the repairs for the South from the damages the Civil War caused. Lasted from 1865 to 1877 and restored the southern states to the Union.
