On February 27, 1801 Thomas Jefferson beat John Adams to become the third president. Thomas Jefferson did many things over his presidency. His accomplishments include, shrinking the government, eliminating taxes, and purchasing the Louisiana Territory. -
The Louisiana Purchase
President Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory in 1803. Napoleon, the leader of France at the time, couldn’t handle the extra land. So the US bought it for $15,000,000 and more than doubled the size of the country. -

The US declared war on Great Britain because of British impressment of US sailors. It was an evenly fought war. Great Britain won battles on land and the US won battles at sea. -

Monroe Elected
James Monroe was elected for presidency in 1816. He made the "Monroe Doctrine". He was the last president to be a founding father of the US. He was also in power during the Missouri Compromise. -
Missouri Compromise
Missouri joined the union in 1820. But the question was if they would join as a slave state or a free state. So to settle this, the Missouri Compromise allowed Missouri to join as a slave state and it added Maine as a free state to keep the number of slave and free states even. -
Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine probably saved the US from being taken over by European countries. The document stated that European nations are prohibited from colonizing the western hemisphere. If they did attempt to colonize, the US would look at as an act of war to battle the entering nation. -
Andrew Jackson wins the 1828 election
Andrew Jackson was elected president in 1828. After being cheated out of the victory in 1824, he won by a land slide. Andrew Jackson was a "two-sided" president. On the good side, he eliminated national debt for the only time in history. But, on the bad side, he evicted all the native american tribes living east of the Mississippi River. -
Indian Removal act of 1830
In 1830, congress passed President Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act. This allowed Jackson to remove all Indians living east of the Mississippi River. This led to the "Trail of Tears". This was a horrible event in American history. One out of every four Indians died as they were being moved.
