Scopes Trial
In Tenesse a law was passed stating that only the Creation theory could be taught in schools. John Scopes, a teacher, purposefully read from Darwin's Origin of Species to a class, as well as incriminated himself so the trial could have a defendant. This trial brought national attention to the subject. -
St. Valentines Day Massacre
A massacre of seven people thought to be ordered by Al Capone. He was a leader of organized crime, as were many other groups at the time. -
A New Anthem
The Star-Spangled Banner is adopted as the country's anthem. It was written by Francis Scott Key. -
The Great Depression Peaks
The Great Depression, the worst economic time in American history, peaked in 1933. Thanks to the New deal as well as other social factors, Things started to return to normal, thought the unemployment rate still laged behind. -

The subject of birth conrol was no longer classified as obscene. It was no longer banned. -

The Fair Labor Standards Act is passed. This sets minimum wage at 25 cents per hour. -

Ernest Hemmingway
For Whom the Bell Tolls was published on this day. It is considered Hemmingway's greatest work. He was an innfluential writer in the 1900's, receiving many literary prizes. -
