Will gets beat up by Clarence

Will approaches Addie and Clarence at the Two Knock. Intoxicated, Will throws a punch and ends up being the one hurt.

Will's Dad makes Will work at the shop as punishment

Will's Dad said to Will, "So long as you live under my roof... you'll earn your keep." He also said he wouldn't tolerate sloth or foolishness.

Will meets Vernon for the 1st time

Will was scared of Vernon since they met because of his size and aura. In this meeting, Vernon came to try and coerce Will's father into joining the KKK.

Will apologizes to Addie for the 1st time

He went to apologize to her because she was upset, not because he was the reason Clarence nearly died. This upset Addie more, but Will was still ignorant. He thought, "For shouldn't my apology have sufficed?"

Will meets Joseph and Ruby Goodhope

Joseph, a black boy, was looking at a victrola outside of the shop and Will tried to sell him a machine. However, that failed and even his father barely got a sale out of him on Joseph terms. His sister Ruby was there with him.

Will saves Ruby

He saved Ruby from getting hit by a truck. He also stuck up for her after getting yelled at by the truck driver.

Will apologizes to Addie for the 2nd time

He realized that Vernon had killed Clarence and he apologized to Addie for it, feeling that it was his fault. "It hadn't occurred to me that I needed absolution," was what he thought to himself after speaking with Addie.

Will drives to Greenwood

To get Angelina's family to safety, he drives to Greenwood and picks them up. In the process, he finds Joseph's family, but Ruby wasn't there. He drove them back to his house.

Will saves Joseph

With Angelina's family and Joseph in tow, Will is flagged down by a group of white men while heading for a sanctuary. These white men take Joseph but Will convinces them he is for Vernon.

Will arrives at the church

Will got the Tyler's to safety and to his surprise, he found Ruby. They welcomed each other in an embrace.

Clete's Death

Clete was shot and killed. He died in the streets with his head resting on Will's lap. However, before he died he told Vernon about Will's plan to move Joseph and Ruby into the construction site of his house.

Vernon's death

After getting into the house, Will found Joseph hunched against the wall with a bullet wound. He convinced Vernon he was there to right his wrongs with the black people. As Vernon was attempting to rape Ruby, Will smashed his head in with a brick.
