Egyptians Create Hieroglyphs
The Egyptians created twenty-two hieroglyphs that led to our modern day alphabet. These hieroglyphs stood for syllables that start with one constant of their language, a vowel (and sometimes no vowel) that were provided by a native speaker. -
776 BCE
First Olympics
The First Olympics were held in Olympia, Greece. They were above all a component of a religious festival in honor of Zeus. Only non-enslaved men who spoke Greek could participate. The games were always held in Olympia rather than changing locations. -
Invention of the Phone
Although many people believe that Alexander Graham Bell invented the idea of a phone, he really only got the patent for the design. Antonio Meucci had the idea for a talking telegraph in 1849 and filed a caveat (an announcement of an invention) in 1871. -
Invention of the Computer
Charles Babbage is credited with creating the first computer. He invented the ‘Difference Machine’ which consisted of 8,000 moving parts and weighed 15 tons. -
Invention of the Internet
In the 1960s, ARPANET was created by Tim Berners-Lee. ARPANET adopted TCP/IP which allowed data to be transmitted through more than one network. This is what would lead researchers to create the modern day, ‘Internet’.
