Selma to Montgomery Marches
The Selma to Montgomery marches were three protest marches, held in 1965, along the 54-mile highway from Selma, AL to the state capital of Montgomery. The marches were organized by nonviolent activists to demonstrate the desire of African-American citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote, in defiance of segregationist repression, and were part of a broader voting rights movement underway in Selma and throughout the American South. -

Montgomery Bus Boycott
This mostly peaceful protest and boycott against the rules for bus travel lasted for 385 days. The situation became so tense at times that King's house was bombed and King was arrested. King's role in the bus boycott transformed him into a national figure and the best-known spokesman of the civil rights movement. -
Birmingham, AL business boycott
Many people boycotted white businesses to encourage the repeal of Jim Crowe Laws. -
March on Washington
More than 1/4 of a million people of diverse ethnicities attended the March and it sprawled from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to the National Mall & around the reflecting pool. At the time, it was the largest gathering of protesters in Washington, D.C.'s history.
The March, and especially King's "I Have a Dream" speech, helped put civil rights at the top of the agenda of reformers in the United States and facilitated passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 -
Nobel Peace Prize
The Nobel Peace prize for 1964 was awarded to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The 35-year-old civil rights leader was the youngest winner of the prize that Dr. Alfred Nobel instituted since the first was awarded in 1901. -

Dr. King was fatally shot by James Earl Ray, on April 4, 1968, as he stood on the second-floor balcony of the motel where he was staying.
