James long was born in Culpeper in 1793. James was born in Culpeper County, Virginia. His parents then took him to Kentucky and after that, they took him to Tennessee. -
Dr.James Long joins the U.S. army
James Long joined the United States Army to serve as a surgeon in the War of 1812. After the battle of New Orleans, he went to Natchez, Mississippi, practiced medicine at Port Gibson. Also at the suggestion of his wife, Jane Herbert Long, bought a plantation near Vicksburg. -
James Long Married Jane
In 1815 James Long met Jane Herbert Dent Wilkinson. He fell in love with her and asked to marry her. And in 1815 Dr.James Long married Jane Herbert Dent Wilkinson. -
James Long leads the Long expedition
In 1817 James was associated with Walker in the merchandising business. Two years later the Adams Onis Treaty aroused such strong opposition in Natchez that prominent citizens planned a filibustering expedition to conquer Texas and placed Long in command. Sadly the expedition failed and Long surrendered. -
James Long gets imprisoned
After the final surrender of the Long expedition, James Long was imprisoned. Long was in a prison in san Antonio and in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.Long went to Mexico City in March 1822 to plead his case before Agustín de Iturbide. -
James Long Dies
James Long was shot and killed by a prison guard on April 8th 1822. The shooting was said and ruled to be an accident but there is evidence that the guard was hired. The evidence said that the guard was hired by a man of the name of Jose Felix Trespalacios.
