Donna Haraway

  • Early Life

    Donna was born in September 1944 in Denver, CO. She is a feminist scholar, cultural theorist, and Philosopher. She attended primary and secondary school in Denver. Her undergrad was in zoology and Philosophy. In 1972, she earned her Ph.D. from Yale. From then on, she has dedicated her life to teaching and researching different concepts within Philosophy, science studies, anthropology, and environmental studies.
  • Cyborg Manifesto

    In 1985, Haraway published her most famous work "Cyborg Manifesto". Her essay introduces the concept of the cyborg as a metaphor for the merging of human and machine; blurring the boundaries between organic and technology. Additionally, she challenges traditional concepts of identity, gender, and embodiment; proposing a postgender world where these categories are destablilized.
  • Primate Visions: Gender, Race, and Nature in the World of Modern Science

    After a decade of research, Donna published "Primate Visions" in 1990. She critically examines the history of primatology and how it intersects with gender, race, and scientific inquiry. The book offers an analysis of how scientific knowledge about primates (apes and monkeys), has been shaped by factors such as culture, gender, and race. Overall, primatology has been influenced by cultural and societal values, which ultimately are gender biased. This bias has impacted how research is done.
