Beatrice Prior and her brother Caleb take the aptitude test to determine which of the five factions they belong in. -

Beatrice's aptitude test results are inconclusive. This means she's Divergent. -

Choosing day. The day where those who are sixteen years of age choose which of the five factions they will go to. They can decide whether to stay in their birth faction or the faction from their aptitude results. Beatrice chooses Dauntless and Caleb, Erudite -

Dauntless initiation begins. The initiates must jump off a moving train then into the Dauntless compound from a tall building. Beatrice also meets Christina, a former Candor. -

Beatrice changes her name to Tris and is the first to jump into the compound where she meets Four, her new instructor. -

Stage one of initiation continues. The initiates learn to shoot a gun and fight. -

Visiting day has arrived and Tris' mother comes to visit her. She tells Tris to go to Erudite and tell Caleb to research the simulation serum. She also discovers that her mother is an Abnegation transfer from Dauntless. -

Stage one of initiation is over and Tris is ranked sixth. -

Peter stabs Edward in the eye out of jealousy because he ranked first whilst Peter ranked second. Edward drops out of initiation making Peter first and Tris fifth. -

Stage two of initiation begins. Tris goes through her first fear landscape and Four finds out she's divergent. -

Stage two of initiation is over. Tris is ranked first, Peter second and Al last. -

Peter, Edward and Al attack and attempt to murder Tris by throwing her over the chasm, but Four comes to the rescue. -

Al tries to apologise, but Tris tells him never to come near her again -

Al kills himself by jumping into the chasm due to the guilt of trying to kills Tris. -

Four takes Tris through his fear landscape where she finds out that his nickname is Four because he only has four fears and that his real name is Tobias Eaton, a former Abnegation. -

Tris goes to visit Caleb at Erudite headquarters and tells him to research the simulation serum. -

Tris takes the last test for the final stage of initiation and goes into her fear landscape. After, she is injected with a mysterious serum by Eric. -

Tris wakes up to the rest of the Dauntless members being controlled by the serum. She finds out that she and Tobias are not affected because they are Divergent. -

The Dauntless soldiers under the simulation begin to attack the Abnegation village. Tris and Tobias are caught and taken to Jeanine Matthews. -

Jeanine injects Tobias with a serum that controls Divergents and Tris is taken away to be executed. -

Tris is put in a tank filled with water like in her simulation and is saved by her mother who breaks the glass. -

Will, who is under the serum, tries to kill Tris, but she kills his first and her mother is murdered by Dauntless soldiers trying to protect her. -

Tris is reunited with her father and brother. They go to the Dauntless compound where they find Peter and Tris spares his life. -

Tris' father sacrifices himself to protect the Tris and the others from Dauntless soldiers. -

Tris breaks Tobias out of the attack simulation and together, they deactivate the simulation. -

Tobias, tris, Marcus, Peter and Caleb escape to Amity.
