Boycott Clippers
On April 25, 2014, a recorded conversation went public of Donald Sterling — now former owner of the Los Angeles Clippers — demanding his mistress, V. Stiviano, to stop bringing black people to his basketball games. Sterling’s racist remarks were in response to Stiviano attending a Clippers game with African-American basketball legend Magic Johnson. The public responded in outrage on social media with the hashtag #BoycottClippers. -
Bring Back Our Girls
On April 14, 2014, the Nigerian militant Islamist group Boko Haram kidnapped 276 school girls in the town of Chibok. The group allegedly performed this act to showcase their beliefs of the place women should hold in society; working in the home and not attending school. As this occurred, the Twitter and Facebook spheres exploded with influencers and average joes holding up signs in a photograph with the hashtag “#BringBackOurGirls” on it. -
Love Wins
Love Wins was a movement in 2015 used on social media using the hashtag #LOVEWINS. It was a result of the decision to make same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states including Texas. -
I Stand With Ahmed
14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed became a symbol for the issue of American islamophobia when he was arrested for taking a homemade clock to school. Following his arrest, social media rallied using the hashtag #IStandWithAhmed as a show of support, which was used more than 300,000 times on Twitter, including one from President Obama.
