  • Je Suis Charlie

    A slogan of freedom of speech and freedom of the press after the 7 January 2015 shooting in which twelve people were killed at the offices of the French satirical weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo. It identifies a speaker or supporter with those who were killed at the Charlie Hebdo shooting, and by extension, a supporter of freedom of speech and resistance to armed threats. Some journalists embraced the expression as a rallying cry for the freedom of self-expression.The slogan started on Twitter.
  • #LOVEWINS

    In 2015, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in favor of same sex marriage in all fifty states across the United States. the hashtag #lovewins, which had been used before but never to the extent it was used the day of this ruling. People all over the U.S. were using the hashtag to show support of the LGBTQ community. This hashtag was primarily used on Twitter but quickly expanded to nearly all social media platforms.
  • Make America Great Again

    MAGA is a campaign slogan used by Donald Trump in the 2016 election. Many believed that Trumps use of the phrase as "probably the most resonant campaign slogan in recent history," citing large majorities of Americans who believed the country was in decline. Trump requested exclusive rights to use the slogan for political purposes. It was registered as a service mark on July 14, 2015, after Trump formally began his presidential campaign. This phrase first went viral on Twitter.
  • #MeToo

    The #MeToo movement was created by sexual harassment victim and activist Tarana Burke and initially started on MySpace. The movement began to spread virally in October 2017 as a hashtag in an attempt to demonstrate the widespread prevalence of sexual assault and harassment, especially in the workplace. In 2017, victims of sexual harassment were encouraged to tweet about it and "give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem".

    Childish Gambino released a four minute music video filled with metaphors about gun violence and race in America. He originally released the video on SNL which was posted on Youtube. This video racked up million of views in just a few days. People were sharing and posting to all social media platforms.
