  • #LoveWins

    #LoveWins
The U.S. Supreme Court made same-sex marriage legal nationwide. #LoveWins was used both before and after the ruling but has since has become a common hashtag for the LGBTQ+ community. There are spikes of its use around June every year which is national Pride Month. I would say this fits the description of a social media disruption because it gave voice to a lot of people that felt silenced before and it also took two words and gave it a bigger meaning.
  • #PrayFor___

    #PrayFor___
I couldn't choose just one #PrayFor__ because I think doing so shows the disruption that the public had with all of the mass acts of violence around the world. The three #PrayFor that trended the most were Orlando, Nice, and Aleppo. This was a way to show that even though there are horrible things happening in the world, humans found a way to ban together.
  • U.S. Presidential Election

    U.S. Presidential Election
Presidential Elections are always a disruption within the media, but this election was a special breed of crazy. Social media heavily influenced this election because of Donald Trump's ~interesting~ uses of Twitter. This created either a cult following of him or a burning hatred of him. This disruption was happening on its own, but social media supported it exploding to what it was and then other forms of media started covering it even more.
  • Greta Effect

    Greta Effect
Greta Thunberg was a 15 year old at the time she gave her speech at the UN Climate Action Summit where she famously said "how dare you". She won Time's Person of The Year and Donald Trump thew a fit about it on social media. Her speech was shared over all forms of social media. She is now a 17-year-old with 10.4 million followers on Instagram alone. This added greatly to the conversation of climate change.
  • #BlackoutTuesday

    #BlackoutTuesday
I chose Blackout Tuesday over #BLM because we already talked about it in the video lectures and articles. I chose Blackout Tuesday because it shifted the conversation from being loud to having people listen and learn about white privilege and the racism that exists in the country today. I feel like this is especially unique to social media because it was meant to only be on social media. News outlets could talk about it, but they couldn't participate in the same way. The reach was global.
