Democritus
Thought of the idea of atoms and that they could not be created, destroyed, or further divided. -
Jan 1, 1005
Aristotle
Could not believe that the “nothingness” of empty space could exist -

First Hospital in North America
First hospital in North America was built in 1503 in Santo Domingo. -
First car
First car was made in 1939. -
Joseph Proust
Proposed the the Law of Constant Composition in 1799. This law was very radical at the time and was hotly contested by Claude Berthollet. -
John Dalton
Revised Democritus’s ideas based upon the results of scientific research
Dalton’s Atomic Theory
• All matter is composed of extremely small particles called atoms.
• All atoms of a given element are identical, having the same size, mass, and chemical properties. Atoms of a specific element are different from those of any other element.
• Atoms cannot be created, divided into smaller particles, or destroyed.
• Different atoms combine in simple whole- number ratios to form compounds.

Amadeo Avagadro
Proposed what is now known as Avogadro's Hypothesis in 1811. The hypothesis states that at the same temperature and pressure, equal volumes of gases contain the same number of molecules or atoms. When this is combined with Gay-Lussac's Law of Combining Volumes, the only possible formulas for hydrogen, oxygen and water are H2, O2 and H2O, respectively. The solution to the atomic weight problem was at hand in 1811. -
Civil War
The United States went to battle with our own people. -
William Crookes
Constructed this forerunner of the modern television picture tube to investigate the properties of cathode rays. -
First Movie
The Horse in Motion was the first movie made. -
First lightbulb
The first lightbulb was made. -
Henri Becquerel
While studying the effect of x-rays on photographic film, he discovered some chemicals spontaneously decompose and give off very pentrating rays. -
J. J. Thomson
First to discover the electron. -
Madam Curie
Studied uranium and thorium and called their spontaneous decay process "radioactivity". She and her husband Pierre also discovered the radioactive elements polonium and radium. -
Albert Einstein
Published his famous equation E=mc 2. -
Robert Millikan
Dealt with the fundamental constituents of the of the universe, the forces they excert on one another, and the results produced by these forces. -
Ernest Rutherford
Became a Nobel laureate for his pioneering work in nuclear physics for his theory of the structure of the atom. -
World War 1
A world wide war. -
First color movie
Cupid Angling was the first color movie. -
Henry Bohr
Developed an explanation of atomic structure that underlies regularities of the periodic table of elements. His atomic model had atoms built up of successive orbital shells of electrons. -
Louis deBroglie
Discovered that electrons had a dual nature- similarto both particles and waves. Particle/wave duality. Supported Einstein. -
Werner Heisenburg
Described atoms by means of formula connected to the frequencies of spectral lines. Proposed Principle of Indeterminancy- you can not know both the position and velocity of a particle. -
James Chadwick
Measured the energy of the protons emerging form the hydrogen atoms. -
World War 2
The 2nd world wide war. -
First microwave
First microwave was built. -
First Computer Company
J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly made the first computer company.
