Charles Grimes was the first European man to explore dights falls, but before Europeans even came to Australia, aboriginal people were living their. These people were called Wurundjeri Bulluk People, they were apart of the Woiworung language group. They relied on the river to provide fish and other animals for them. At the Dights Falls they would have ceremonies such as marriage. the Dights Falls was also a great place to trade with other tribes. it was a special place to the aboriginal people. -

In 1803, Charles Grimes is believed to be the first European man to explore the Yarra river. He showed his survey party the Yarra falls (now days the Yarra falls is called Dights falls). Most people said that the Falls would not be a good place to live in the future. -
John Dights Opens A Milling Company In Victoria
In 1839, John Dights buys a block of land in Melbourne for $781.10. The land that he purchased was 26 acres of land and it was along the Yarra river. Dights had a milling company in NSW, Sydney, but he wanted to open one in Victoria as well. He needed to have land near the water because he wanted his mill to run on water. -

New Weir And Fishway Built
Melbourne waters had done some research about dights falls, when looking at the research they noticed the amount of fish that lived at Dights Falls had goon down and the fishway was not working effectively. The weir is blocking the fish from getting past. The weir at dights falls is not the same as it was when they first put it in place nearly 100 years ago, they have added more modern materials, but the weir was just getting to old and too hard to fix. They needed a new fishway and weir. -
After building the new weir
After building the new fishway and weir, they noticed lots of good changes at dights falls. They noticed that some fish breeds that haven't been spotted at dights falls for years were suddenly showing up, they also saw some new breeds of fish at the falls. They noticed that the fish were using the new fishway a lot and it was much more effective then the old one.
