Development of the Periodic Table

  • Late 1700s

    Late 1700s
French sciencist, Antoine Lavoiseir compiled a list of all elements that were known. 33 elements organized in four catagories.
  • Mid 1800s

Mid 1800s played a major role that led to the develpoment of many new chemistry, based industries.
  • Late 1800s

Brought an increase in number of know elements
  • 1864

Newlands proposed an organizational scheme for the elements. Named it Law of Octaves.
  • 1869

    1869
Meyer and Mendelev demonstrated a connection between mass and properties of elements. Mendelev was given more credit than Meyer because published his organizatiopnal scheme first.
  • 1870

    1870
    1870, over 100 elements created.
  • 1894

    1894
In 1894, William Ramsay discovered the noble gases and realised that they represented a new group in the periodic table.
  • 1914

    1914
In 1914, Henry Moseley determined the atomic number of each of the known elements. He realised that, if the elements were arranged in order of increasing atomic number rather than atomic weight, they gave a better fit within the ‘periodic table
