Development of Football

  • Early forms of football

    Before the 1600s (1100s) football was starting to gain popularity in Europe in a mob form, this was known as mob football which was quite like a war whilst playing football, it was played between neighboring towns and villages in festive seasons.
  • Florence

    During Epiphany and Lent the city of florence played a game which today is known as "calcio storico" ("historic kickball") in the Piazza Santa Croce. The young people of the city would dress up in fine silk costumes and and embark in a violent form of football. For example, calcio players could punch, shoulder charge, and kick opponents. Blows below the belt were allowed. The game is said to have originated as a military training exercise, this is seen as the earliest form of the code rules.
  • Francis Willughby book of games

    the first to describe goals and a distinct playing field: "a close that has a gate at either end. The gates are called Goals." His book includes a diagram illustrating a football field. He also mentions tactics ("leaving some of their best players to guard the goal"); scoring and the way teams were selected. He is the first to describe a "law" of football: "they must not strike an opponent's leg higher than the ball".
  • English Schools

    English schools began to codify in football games like the offside rule in the 1800s, the first known set of rules was in 1815
  • First ever matches

    in 1834 Eton School played Harrow school in the first ever match in public school history.
  • Clubs

    Clubs started to appear for this fast growing sport The first documented club to bear in the title a reference to being a 'football club' were called "The Foot-Ball Club" who were located in Edinburgh, Scotland, during the period 1824–41.The club forbade tripping but allowed pushing and holding and the picking up of the ball, the first ever football match recorded that was not public schools was 13 February 1856 Charterhouse School v. St Bartholemew's Hospital.
  • The FA

    The FA came to unite multiple teams to play under their draft of rules which were A player shall be entitled to run with the ball towards his rivals goal if he makes a fair catch, or catches the ball on the first bound; but in case of a fair catch, if he makes his mark he shall not run.If any player shall run with the ball towards his rivals goal, hold, trip or hack him, or to wrest the ball from him, but no player shall be held and hacked at the same time.
  • The First division

    Founded in 1888 It originally consisted of a single division of 12 clubs Accrington, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston North End, Stoke (now Stoke City), West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers, this was the top league in England for the next 100 years
  • Rationalisation

    Was promoted so sports can organise and be more structured so that people would know what they were doing other than making it up as they go, groups like the YMCA were formed and started to have facilities like a football pitch.
  • Industrial Revolution

    In the 1900s work life was very tough as it was very cramped and physically a demanding job, a lot of the jobs back then was factory work and they did not get much time off so sport activities were found often tough to fit in daily life.
  • Effects Of Industrial revolution

    Britain trade influence grew with sports being exported with traders like India and cricket, less leisure in cities, the working class watch boxing and wrestling to gamble and the upper class could participate in sport.
  • WW1

    All sports were stopped because young people were recruited to fight in the war which led to major sporting events eing cancelled
  • After War

    The upper class people were allowed to go back to playing their sport but the middle class people could only go back to watching which was mainly football
  • The First World Cup

    Uruguay as the hosts it started off as a 13 country tournament as european teams could not travel so far to play, The first two World Cup matches took place simultaneously and were won by France and the United States, who defeated Mexico 4–1 and Belgium 3–0, respectively. Lucien Laurent of France scored the first goal in World Cup history, while that day United States goalkeeper Jimmy Douglas posted the first "clean sheet" in the tournament, winners of tournament was hosts uruguay.
  • WW2

    Sports were again cancelled due to war again but some events kept running such as the olympics.
  • After WW2

    Transport greatly improved with people being able for long distance travel because of railways and with the introduction of air travel people were now able to go play internationally for european competition
  • First European cup

    The 1955–56 European Cup was the first season of the European Cup, UEFA's premier club football tournament. The tournament was won by Real Madrid, who defeated Reims 4–3 in the final at Parc des Princes, Paris, on 13 June 1956.
  • The Premier League

    Founded in 1992 following the decision of clubs in the Football League First Division to break away from the Football League, founded in 1888, and take advantage of a lucrative television rights deal.The deal was worth around £1 billion a year domestically as of 2013–14, The Premier League is the most-watched sports league in the world, broadcast in 212 territories to 643 million homes and a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people
  • The Champions League

    Renamed from European cup to the champions league and it is where the best 4 teams in Europe top leagues battle it out to see who remains supreme the team that has won it the most is real Madrid
  • VAR introduced

    VAR was introduced in the world cup and was ready be in the premier league the following season, this was introduced to give definite results but has a mixed bag of feedback.
