  • Traditional Maori Society

    Learning was in the traditional ways
    Collaborative learning amongst fellow families and villagers of tribe
    Learning and building skills towards leader and chief role of their own Moari tribe and community
  • Establishment of Missionary Schools

  • Support from the Government for the following to be implemented:

    • industrial training
    • language classess - english
    • reigious education
  • Boarding

    It was compulsory for students to board at their schools .
  • Free Education

    • free, secular education was introduced
    • it became compulsory for students between 7 and 13 year of age to attend school.
  • Compulsory education for Maori

    • Maori learners were forbidden to speak Maori
  • Free Education

    Education became free of cost.
  • Native Schools

    Native schools were introduced
  • Introduction of Kura Maori

    the following schools were introduced and established in NZ:
    Kohanga Reo
    Kura Kaupapa Maori
    Wananga
  • Leaving Age and Recognition

    Raised to 16 years old
    Kura Kaupapa Maori gain recognition in Education Act 1989
  • Te Marautanga o Aotearoa

    Introduce and implemented
  • Bilingual and Special Charter School Established
