Niépce
The first permanent image was taken by Niépce. He used a dark camera and some light sensitive material combined with several hours of sun exposure. -
Daguerreotype
In 1839 Louis Daguerre patented the daguerreotype, which is considered the first camera ever. He worked with Niépce in order to find a more confortable and practical way of taking a picture, though this consisted in a long quimical procedure. -
Manufacture of photographic lenses.
Carl Zeiss, who is an optician, began manufacturing photographic items through his company: Carl Zeiss AG. -
The moist collodion.
This was a procedure created by the photographer Gustave Le Gray which made the exposure time shorter, and as a result the costs of photography were reduced. This promoted taking pictures of known and rich people back in the time. -
The copy to the albumin
This was an improvement of the moist collodion because it generated images from this. This lasted 30 years and it became the most used negative. Its use was mainly for portraits. -
The Box camera by Kodak
Kodak was founded in 1888 and it is one of the largest companies producing and marketing photographic equipment. This was the year where the first film camera ever was made, and they named it "Box camera". These were very easy to understand so everybody could use them. However a drawback was that these photos needed to be developed in a complicated process. -
Reflex Camera.
Eventhough they were created in 1934, it was not until 1956 that they were in the market with an improved model, becoming one of the first electronic cameras on the market. Nowadays it is still one of the most used cameras. -
Polaroid
In the 30s the photographic industry increased its popularity due to magazines. During the 20th century a lot of developments were made when it comes to this field. In 1947 Polaroids cameras became popular because they were easy to handle and quick. They eventually lost popularity because of their poor quality. -
Digital Photography.
Although it my not seem like it, digital photography has existed since the 20th century. The first CCD sensor was made in the Bell labs. This allowed to save the images on a memory card. Later on, the format .jpeg appeared which enables saving images with better quality. And finally Photoshop arose 10 years later. -
The bridge camera.
We could catalogue this type of cameras between compact cameras and reflex cameras. This one is bigger and has way more feauters that make it more professional; like zoom or better vision quality. -
The rise of phone photography
Due to a casuality, Philippe Kahn started working with Motorola in 1997 to launch the first phone with built-in camera. In the year 2000 this phones were a reality. Thnaks to their popularity, smartphones started to get more quiality when it comes to photography, until nowadays, where they are even better than some compact cameras. -
Action camera
This type of camera is perfect whether you practice a extreme sport or you travel regularly. We all know the GoPro, which is shock-resistant, waterproof and you can even record in 4K. This whole idea came up because of a person who wanted to take pictures while surfing. -
Mirrorless camera.
This is a mirror and pentaprism-free camera, which allows you to see how your picture is going to turn out thanks to a screen. It is lighter than the previous cameras though it manteins their options and quality. -
Today
Little progress are being made every day when it comes to photography and cameras. Nowadays, we are lucky to have such facilities to take pictures any moment and any time but it seems that, for young people, it is appealing to use what our ancestors used so cameras like Polaroids or analogue ones are becoming popular again.
