Development in travel and tourism

  • Butlins 1970s

    As the number of visitors grew the idea of butlins being a holiday camp faded. this was also a time when package holidays were becoming more and more popular.
  • Benidorm 1953

    in 1953, the mayor of Benidorm, Pedro Franco to lift the bikini ban to increase the inbound tourism. In 1966, the Alicante airport opened increasing Benidorms inbound tourist capacity by millions.
  • Ferries 1955

    Dover's first two drive-on drive off ferry berths were opened at the Eastern Docks.
    In the first year it was anticipated that they would handle about 10,000 vehicles per year.
    This affects travel and tourism due to people no longer needing to hire cars due to them being able to take their own.
  • Boeing 727 1965

    this plane was created after Boeing 707 when people realized jets could bring in huge amounts of income from people traveling from different parts of the world. This allowed the business of the travel and tourism to evolve. Following on from this boeing 727 was introduced 'February 1st 1964' (wikipedia 2016) and boarded flights until the late 1980s.
  • Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet 1969

    Boeing 747- Jumbo jet is originally an american 'wide body commercial jet airliner and cargo aircraft' (wikipedia2016). it was the first wide bodied jet made, and the most recognized due to its distinct 'hump'.
    The first flight was in the 1970s and held the passengers capacity record for 37 years, 'as of may 2016, the 747 has been involved in 60 hull-loss accidents resulting in 3,718 fatalities' (wikipedia, 2016)
  • Lifting of currency restrictions 1970s

    Before the 1970s tourists were only allowed to take £50 in sterling out of the country per person, this act enables tourists to take as much money as they like. This led to an increase in appeal of package holidays
  • ATOL 1973

    ATOL was introduced in 1973 after a name of travel company failures left people stranded.The scheme was designed to cover charter flights and package holidays. However ATOL changed their scheme in 2012, it now covers all overseas air holidays where a flight and accommodation have been booked together, as well as flights booked separately.
  • Dubai 1980

    In the 1980s and early 1990s Dubai decided to emerge as a major international tourist destination. A major tourist attraction is the Burj Al Arab Hotel with a total of 7 stars, built in 1999. Customers expect high luxury of a low cost and Dubai resorts are copied all over the world.
  • Road 1991

    M40 completed between Oxford and Birmingham. this makes it easier to travel from Oxford to Birmingham which will attract more tourists if its easier to access.
  • Channel Tunnel 1994

    The tunnel first opened on 6th may 1994.
    It is 31.4 miles long.
    On the 26th June 1995 the start of the commercial euro tunnel shuttle service for coaches opened.
    This affects travel and tourism due to it affecting a faster alternative on how to travel to France.
  • Butlins 2005

    In 2005 the on-resort hotels were completed, then in 2009 the ocean hotel was built. this means the tourist will have a better choice of where they want to stay when they come for their short breaks away.
  • Rail 2011

    The number of rail journeys that people took in Great Britain between 2010 and 2011 reaches a record of 1.16 billion. more and more people are travelling by trains than any other type of transport e.g. buses.
  • Boeing 727 1965

    This changed the travel and tourism industry because instead of domestic tourism, outbound tourism was becoming easier for people this allowed tourists to travel to different parts of the world quickly and efficiently. also the travel and tourism industry was growing economically because of the money being earned by these planes which allowed the industry to evolve.
