Development in Travel and Tourism

  • 1871- Bank holidays

    In 1871, Sir John Lubbock introduced the 'bank holiday act' it introduced a concept of holiday with pay. So, all the tourists attractions remain open for example museums. It allows people to travel more because of the bank holiday as they have a day off work.
  • 1950s- National Parks

    10 first national parks designated with Peak District being the first in 1951.
  • 1953- Benidorm

    In 1953, Pedro Zaragoza lifted the bikini ban to increase inbound tourism in Benidorm.
  • 1955- Ferries

    In 1955, Dover's first two drive-on drive-off ferry berths were opened at the Eastern Docks. In the first year they thought that they will handle about 10,000 per year. This affects travel and tourism due to people no longer needing to hire cars due to them being able to take their own.
  • 1960s-Butlins

    They introduced a monorail to Skegness other features such as chairlifts, a pool with underwater viewing Windows. This made Butlins more advanced with better facilities for families.
  • 1969- Development of Tourism Act

    This act created tourist boards for example 'VisitBritain' and 'VisitEngland'. They wanted to promote and advertise Great Britain's tourism industry, domestically and abroad so that Great Britain would get more popular.
  • 1970s - Lifting of currency restrictions

    Before 1970s tourists were only allowed to take £50 out of the country per person. From 1970s tourists were allowed to take as much as they want to so they stayed on their holiday for longer. This also led to increase in appeal of package holidays.
  • 1970s- Butlins

    As the number of visitors grew, the idea of Butlins being a 'holiday camp' faded as package holidays were getting more and more popular .
  • 1976- Concorde

    Concorde was introduced in 1976. It was the fastest plane which travelled twice the speed of sound ranging at 'Mach 2.04'. Due to this people were able to travel faster and further than before to countries such as America.
  • 1980- Dubai

    In the 1980s, Dubai decided to become a major tourist destination. One of the most popular attractions in Dubai is the Burj Al Arab hotel with a total of 7 stars built in 1999.
  • 2004-Trip Advisor

    Trip Advisor provides recommendation on hotels, restaurants and flights etc. 280 million people use this website before travelling.
  • 1974- Teletext

    Teletext allowed people to book holidays at home. Ceefax was the world's first teletext information service in 1974. More people started to book holidays from travel agents as it was a lot easier to do.
