Destiny's First Years: Trust vs. Mistrust
Destiny (age 1) learns how to walk based on the fact that she had a network of loving relatives that she trusted helping her learn. In Erikson's first stage, trust versus mistrust, the crisis is whether or not a child in their infant months can have that sense of being cared for and loved, which leads to (trust) being instilled in them from an early age; if this quality isn't developed in infancy people can grow up never trusting anyone and have difficulty maintaining relationships (mistrust). -
Destiny goes to Middle School: Industry vs. Inferiority
Destiny (age 10) learns to start adapting to social norms pertaining to education and now realizes that learning is hard but very rewarding once a concept is mastered. Her parents' role in her education is: rewarding her when she solves a difficult problem or restricting her when she shows signs of not learning a concept. In Erikson's fourth stage, industry vs. inferiority, the crisis is whether or not a child can be taught in a positive and well manner (industry) or lack of (inferiority). -
Destiny Graduates: Identity vs. Identity Confusion
Destiny (age 17) graduates early from high school because she chose to study hard and made the conscious decision to not let anything stand in her way regardless of her environment and present circumstances. In Erikson's fifth stage, identity versus identity confusion, the crisis is whether or not a person in their adolescent years can develop an awareness of who they are, what they can do, and what place they hold in society at that present moment (identity), or lack of (identity confusion).
