James Meredith wins admission to Univerity of Mississippi
After being denied admission in 1956, James Meredith sued the University of Mississippi and after six years he won the lawsuit and secured admission to the univeristy. After several attempts to enter the campus, Meredith was finally escorted onto the campus by U.S. Marshals on September 30th 1962 -

Supreme court upholds busing of students as a proactive measure to end segregation. -
NAACP v. Georgia
One of many court cases alleging racial bias in academic tracking of students. A disproportionate number of black students were being assigned to lower tracks and special education. However in these cases the supreme court upheld student tracking based on socio-economic status as legitimate. -

School districts begin to be relesed from court-ordered desgregation measures. -
Georgia school host first racially integrated prom
Many schools in the South cancelled their proms at the beginning of desegregation to avoid having to hold integrated dances. Decades later, these schools are finally beginning to hold integrated proms.
