The Romans
After the King was sent away, Rome was declared as a republic. The upper-class citizens known as Patricians ruled over. The common people, known as plebs, took matters into their own hands to win more rights. The plebs created whats called a Senate with the Patricians being Senators. But, only the men (civis) were allowed to have their word in on the debate. -

Down with Kings
A group of British nobility forced the king to give up his divine right. The divine right was the right for the king to... be king by the power of God. The group also told the king to create a parliament as well. Parliament is made up of the word Parler, meaning to speak. In other words, to have a say on something. -

Magna Carta
The same year, King John of England was forced to write the Magna Carta. The document gave citizens rights and the king limits. It was also the first document to mark the beginning of our parliamentary government. -
The American Revolution
The birth of the first true democracy started in the United States. People could now vote for who should be in charge. There are also three branches that control the government. If one branch abuses their power, they can be run by the others. However, it did take time for the vote to be given to everyone. -
The French Revolution
The French had their own revolution too. They started their own form of democracy, but some rulers acted more like dictators to get what they wanted. They also used the guillotine to remove people who are not in favour of the ruler's ideas. They don't understand what democracy even means. -
The Downfall
With democracy taking shape, it wasn't as great as most would think. 4 systems emerged and grew from it. This includes war, class struggle (industrialism), economic calamity, and an increase in nationalism. Because of these effects, new forms of government emerged such as Fascism and Nazism to fix what democracy has done. However, it only made things worse. -
The Rise Up
The United Nations was formed to create human rights all around the world. It is promised that human beings have the right to live free from abuse by government. It was a great step in making democracy greater for people and the world.
