Delaware Founded
The Delaware Colony was founded in 1638; Peter Minuit was who discovered the colony and he also discovered the New Sweden Company, the colonists built a Old Swedes Church and it is one of the oldest house of worship in America and it is still used today. -
First African
Black Anthony was the first African to go to the colony of Delaware and he was captured and brought to Fort Christina and nine years later he served as a special assistant to Governor Printz. -
The Defeat
The Dutch had defeated the Swedes on Delaware which had ended the New Sweden Colony and Delaware became a part of the New Netherland. -
Became English
Sir Robert Carr threw the Dutch off Delaware and then they claimed the land for James ,Duke of York. The land of Delaware soon became an English colony. -
Took Control
James, Duke of York, gave control of the Delaware colony to William Penn then he made it a part of Pennsylvania and it was established as a representative form of government. -

In 1704 Penn granted the three lower countires of Pennsylvaina and it broke away to Delaware. -
Led to War
The Delaware region became the Three Lower Counties, and in 1731 Willington was founded by Thomas Willing and it was renamed Wilmington. In 1754 the French and Indian War did take place. When the French and Indian War ended in 1763 Great Britain took control and England increased taxes to pay for the war. In 1775 the Revolutionary War began. -
Declared Independence
The Delaware Assembly gained independence from England, Caesar Rodney, very sick from cancer and asthma rode from Dover all the way to Philadelphia to make a vote for independence, the Three Lower Counties adopted the constitution and it became Delaware State. -
First Gonernor
John McKinley was the first governor of Delaware, then Delaware signed Articles of Confederation the British Troops marched across Delaware to Philadelphia the American troops retreated from British a Coochs Bridge: British kept Wilmington, and the capital moved form New Castle to Dover. -
First State
Thomas Coke, Francis Asbury established the Methodist Church a separate denomination U.S., Delaware confirmed the U.S. Constitution and it became the nation’s first state. -
Public School
The second state was adopted and the name changed to the State of Delaware, the public school fund was established by the state legislature, and the State House in Dover was now complete. -
Defeat of British
Captain Thomas MacDonough of Delaware had defeated British on a lake called Lake Champlain and that was the war’s turning point, James Bayard of Delaware the signer of the Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812; Steamboats line in between New Castle and Philadelphia finally opened; then the Delaware Canal opened. -
Joined Army
When the civil occurred, there were more than 12,000 troops from Delaware that joined the Union Army, and very few joined the Confederate Army. -
Battle of Antietam
The Delaware troops won the Battle of Antietam, they won because they were determined as being fighters, they then were nicknamed the “Blue Hens” because of their bluish cocks during the campaigns. -
First Women
The First women suffrage was held in Delaware, and the Delaware legislature voted against the 15th Amendment in the U.S. Constitution, which gave the blacks the right to vote, the separate schools and funding for just the white was now letting African American children be allowed. -
America's Cup

Received Land
Thomas F. Bayard in-charge of the first U.S. Ambassador to the Great Britain: in boundary even though there was a dispute with Maryland, Delaware received all the land, it was known as “the Wedge”. The present state constitution was adopted. -
First Automobile
Emily Bissell came upon the Christmas Seal, and the first automobile was licensed, the Battleship USS Delaware was commissioned. The Child Labor Law was now enacted. -
World War I
There were about 10,000 Delawareans served in the World War I. Also the U.S. Supreme Court approved that Delaware had the right to control the Delaware River. -
World War II
There were about 30,000 Delaware men and women who served in the World War II. There were Air bases created in New Castle, Dover. The University of Delaware wanted to end segregation by Delaware Court of Chancery. -
Public Places and Martin Luther King
The Delaware Assembly got rid of segregation in public places. The President John F. Kennedy made the Delaware Turnpike. Fights broke out after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. The National Guard kept the city under control for about 10 months. -

Daniel Nathans had won the Nobel Prize in the Medicine with his work, so Delaware started to bus children form the inner cities to suburbs which helped integrated bus crossing in the U.S. -
