    The Libson Earthquake took place on November 1st, 1755. The magnitude of this earthquake was 8.5-9.0 with a death toll of 10,000. The earthquake almost totally destroyed Lisbon and adjoining areas. It was the third known large scale earthquake to hit the city ever and was one of the deadliest earthquakes.

    The Krakatoa Earthquake and volcano eruption took place on August 26th, 1883. It had a magnitude of six and a death toll of 36,147. This earthquake generated the loudest sound ever reported in history. When the volcano erupted, the explosion fired up hot ash fifty miles into the air.

    This earthquake took place on April 1st, 1946. It had a magnitude of 8.6 and a death toll of 173. This earthquake occurred near the Aleutian Islands and had an imperceptible effect on the Alaskan mainland. It resulted with $26 million in damage and had a mercalli intensity of six (strong).

    The Great Chilean Earthquake took place on May 23rd, 1960. It had a magnitude of 9.4-9.6 and a death toll of 1,655. This earthquake was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded. It occurred in the afternoon and lasted approximately ten minutes. Hundreds of people were already reported dead by the time the tsunami struck.

    The Good Friday Earthquake, also known as the Great Alaskan Earthquake, took place on March 3rd, 1964. The magnitude of the earthquake was 9.2 and a death toll of 139. The duration of of this earthquake was four through five minutes long and the depth of sixteen miles. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in North America.

    The Hokkaido Earthquake took place on July 12th, 1993 in Japan. It had a magnitude of 7.7 and a death toll of 44. This earthquake caused moderately severe damage, VIII (8) on the mercalli scale. The quake caused fires to start in town of the Okushiri, adding more damage.

    The Papua New Guinea earthquake took place on July 17th, 1998. The magnitude of the earthquake ended up being 7.5 and the death toll of sixty seven humans. This earthquake triggered landslides, killing and burying people and houses, affecting water sources, and destroying crops. 554,000 humans were affected with 270,000 in need of immediate humanitarian assistance.
  • Tohoku Earthquake

    The Tohoku Earthquake took place on March 11th, 2011. It had a magnitude of 9.0-9.1 and a death toll of 15,897. The tsunami swept the Japanese mainland and killed over 10,000 people, mainly through drowning. The quake was preceded by a number of large fore shocks, with hundreds of after shocks.

    Sumatra Earthquake took place the day after Christmas on December 26th, 2004. The magnitude of the earthquake was 9.1 and the death toll of 227,898. This quake struck 150 miles from the coast of Sumatra island. The quake occurred along a fault line between the Indian tectonic plate and the Burma micro plate. The total damage of this quake was 15 billion USD.
  • Samoa Earthquake

    Samoa earthquake took place on September 29th, 2009. It had a magnitude of 8.5 and a death toll of 22. It occurred in an extensional environment and maximum Mercalli intensity of six. It caused substantial damage and loss of life in Samoa, and Tonga.

    The Chile Earthquake took place on February 27th, 2010. The magnitude was 8.8 with a death toll of 452. It caused a widespread damage on land and initiating a tsunami that devastated some coastal areas of the country. Intense shaking of this earthquake lasted for at least three minutes.

    The Sulawesi Earthquake took place on September 27th, 2018 (little over a year ago). It had a magnitude of 5.0 and a death toll of 1,944 and 1,500 injured. The quake caused major soil liquefaction in areas and around Palu. It led to mud flows which many buildings because submerged.
