  • Hull's "Philosophy of Biological Science"

In Hull's book "Philosophy of Biological Science" he tackles various aspects of biology in a philosophical sense. A main point made in this book is the structure of theory in biology. He examines and discusses the processes that help form biological theories such as how they are devised, tested, and change over time.

  • Hulls ideas on Science as a Process

In Hull's book "Science as a Process" he introduces his ideas on science as a process and the balance between competition and cooperation in science. Hull states that in science the motivating factor for recognition in a professional sense is the desire for recognition, more specifically recognition through the use of one's ideas and work. Scientists inherit ideas and methods through those before them and reciprocate use for their own self-interest for recognition.
  • Hull's comparisons to the process of science and evolution

Hull compared science as a process to evolution. He stated that science changes via processes of variation and selection, just as biological processes do. He compared ideas being replicated to the process of genes being replicated. He also said that scientific change was a process in which ideas compete with others and struggle for replication (Godfrey-Smith, 2003). Godfrey-Smith, P. (2003). • Hull's Metaphysics of Evolution

In his 1989 publication of "The Metaphysics of Evolution", Hull discusses subjects such as genes, and species. He argues against the notion of the gene as a primary unit of selection. He believed that there was more factors included in selection, including what he called "interactions" which influence selection and evolution. He also argues for species to be considered as individuals rather than collections of organisms.
  • Legacy

David Hull was influential in both philosophy and biology and is said to be the founder of the field of philosophy of biology. His work inspires discussions on research in both areas and connects the two in ways that benefit science and philosophy.
