    David Bloor started his academic career studying philosophy and psychology. In 1972 he was awarded his PhD from the University of Edinburgh for his thesis Speech and the Regulation of Behaviour.

    In 1976, Bloor published Knowledge and Social Imagery. Bloor define the four governing tenets and explains that casual is the circumstance that discoveries are made outside of just social reasons, impartial looks at both the success and failures of science that demand explanation. He also explains that symmetrical is the universal way of approaching scientific successes and failures, and reflexive is the need for basic information.
