Darwin gathers supplies for the trip when he is notified he may be replaced by a "friend" of the captain's. He goes to meet the captain, and is met with kindness. -

After a short delay, Darwin embarks on the voyage, while plagued with seasickness. -

Darwin is quickly cheered up on an African volcanic Island, where he noticed compressed corals and shells above sea level. He relates it to a theory of an ever-shifting earth. -

Over time, Darwin notices captain FitzRoy's temper. He argues about slavery, but reconciles quickly. -

Darwin catches up on letters while docked, telling his close friend that he is eager to see the Galapagos -
Incitement for reflection
Landing on the Galapagos, he is not impressed, and thinks the little finches insignificant. Looking back later, he notices the age of the island, and how the animals could have arrived and changed their traits. -

Darwin is impressed with the religious devotion of his guide while hiking in Tahiti. -
New Animals
While in Australia, Darwin is baffled by the differences of the animals there, especially the duck-billed platypus. -
Return
Darwin is thrilled to see the shores of England. His sisters believe he has lost interest in Christianity. He has not, but wants to devote his life to naturalism.
