    -Known for her efforts to publish her husband's works and for her novel Frankenstein
    -She writes about Victor Frankenstein creating a living being out of raw material.
    -How it relates to Dark Romanticism: It has a dark theme of death and revenge.

    Dark Romanticism

    Works in the dark romantic spirit were influenced by Transcendentalism, but did not entirely embrace the ideas of Transcendentalism. Terror, punishment, guilt and sin, and human fallibility are main points that Dark Romantic authors wrote about. Authors focused not only on the good in people, but the evil side as well.
  • Lyceum Movement

    Lyceum Movement
    Founded by Josiah Holbrook, it gave people an opportunity to hear lectures, debates, and essays. Many famous speakers and authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne and Susan B. Anthony attended. The movement essentially focused on the American education and the importance of it. It later broadened "school curricula and the development of local museums and libraries".

    -Known for his dark short stories about revenge and madness
    -The Raven is about a man believes he is being haunted by a raven and is driven mad by his own thoughts.
    -How it relates to Dark Romanticism: "Poe was trying to use darkness to set the scene and the mood, and he also wanted to show the narrator’s slow descent into his own darkness".

    The Scarlet Letter
    -Author- Nathaniel Hawthorne (7/4/1804-3/19/1864)
    -Known for his novels, such as The Scarlet Letter, that reflects humanity
    -Hester Prynne has a child out of wedlock in the Puritan era.
    -How it relates to Dark Romanticism: " Hawthorne proposes to study the effects of sin on the lives of his characters"
  • Moby Dick

    Moby Dick
    -Author- Herman Melville (8/1/1819-9/28/1891)
    -Known for Moby Dick, which focuses on revenge and real-life events
    -Moby Dick is about a sailor seeking revenge on a whale that bit off his leg on a previous voyage.
    -How it relates to Dark Romanticism: having power and influence and seeking revenge
  • Gothic Literary Movement

    A literary movement that focused on ruin, decay, death, terror, and chaos, and privileged irrationality.
    It formed in response to the historical, sociological, psychological, and political conflicts of the late eighteenth century.
  • Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde

    Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde
    -Author: Robert Louis Stevenson (9/13/1850-12/3/1894)
    -Wrote The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, explains the horrific conflicting traits within a single man.
    -How it relates to Dark Romanticism: explains the dark side of human nature and steps into the supernatural.
  • If I Should Die

    If I Should Die
    -Author- Emily Dickinson (12/10/1830-5/15/1886)
    -Known for her poetry that portrays death and immorality
    -If I Should Die is explains that if she were to die, life would still go on.
    -How it relates to Dark Romanticism: shows the good things about life but how it wouldn't matter if she died.
  • Dracula

    Dracula
    -Author-Abraham “Bram” Stoker (9/8/1847-4/20/1912)
    -Known for his work of Dracula about folklore and the supernatural.
    -Dracula is about a vampire trying to find blood and spread the undead curse.
    -How it relates to Dark Romanticism: goes into detail about supernatural horror and the terrorizing of damsels in distress.
