    Daniel Handler, better known by his pen name Lemony Snicket was born in San Francisco, California. Though he goes by Daniel Handler in real life, Lemony Snicker is his nickname. He is the son of Lou Handler, an accountant and former Jewish refugee from Germany, and Sandra Handler, an opera singer and retired dean of City College of San Francisco.

    Daniel began attending operas with his mother in the early 1980s because his mother was an opera singer. He began singing in a couple productions with the San Francisco Boys Chorus.
