An American Philosopher is born
Daniel Clement Dennett III, born March 28, 1942, Boston, Massachusetts. Dennett is still an active philosopher and is noted as one of the "Four Horsemen of Atheism". -
Educational background
Daniel Dennett received a B.A. in philosophy from Harvard University in 1963, following that, he pursued graduate study at the University of Oxford. Dennett was also interested in the nature of consciousness, so much, in fact, he wrote his doctoral thesis on the topic, which he later turned into his first book, Content and Consciousness in 1969. Dennett is also very active in artificial intelligence and cognitive psychology. -
Professional career
Dennett has written many books throughout his career, some even considered him to be an extremist, in the late 80s. However, Dennett has been on MIT research teams, in order to create robotic intelligence. "On the strength of his philosophical contributions to the emerging field of cognitive science, Dennett was appointed the director of the Center for Cognitive Studies at Tufts in 1985. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1987" (Britannica, 2019). -
Conversation that sparked an Atheist revolution
In 2007, Daniel Dennett, Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris sat down for two hours conversing various topics. What makes this conversation famous, to Dennett himself, is how four experts in various fields of art and science came together in one room and spoke. Now, many people might see this as rather insignificant or nothing new. However, this was the first time for the Atheist movement to have multiple experts gather in the same time and place to talk. -
