Education Act 1944
Conservative politician R.A. Butler, introduced the Tripartite System of secondary education and made secondary education free for all pupils. The tripartite system consisted of three different types of secondary school: grammar schools, secondary technical schools and secondary modern schools. -
Education Act - 1962
required LEAs to provide students with grants for living costs and tuition fees; placed legal obligation on parents to ensure that children received a suitable education at school or otherwise - failure to comply could result in prosecution; made LEAs legally responsible for ensuring that pupils attended school. -

Both parents leave school at 15
and take on Hairdressing and Electrician apprenticeships. Their experience of education had a profound effect on mine. Had they stayed on at school they may have had very different jobs (maybe higher paid) and could of moved out of the (very poor) area. As it happened I attentended the same primary and secondary schools as my Mother. -
School leaving age raised
School leaving age raised to 16 from 15; this left a number of school leavers who had left at 15 but were required by law to complete a further year of education. This meant that I wouldn't be following in my parents footsteps and leaving school at 15. -
Education Act 1980
a major act which instituted the assisted places scheme (public money for children to go to private schools), gave parents greater powers on governing bodies and over admissions, and removed the obligation on LEAs to provide school milk and meals. -

GCSE introduced
The GCSE replaced the 'two tier' nature of GCE and CSE qualifications. The GCSE would be the road I would be pushed down by my teachers. Vocational qualifications were only mentioned once and were thought to be suitable for those who wern't very 'academic' -

1997 Education Act
Abolished NCVQ and SCAA and replaced them with the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA). -
Tuition fees (Universities)
Tuition fees introduced.
When I left sixth form if I wanted to go to University in 2000 the fees would of been just over £1,000 a year, when I finally decided to go to University in 2008 the fees were just over £3,000. Next year they will rise to £9,000. If they were £9,000 in 2000 would I have been brave enough to go to University or get a job and hopefully have a debt free life? I'm thinking the latter. -

1999 Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
1999 Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA): pilot schemes aimed at greater take-up of and achievement in post-16 education. I missed out on the EMA all together. As my A-Level results weren't the best I wonder if I could of done better if I wasn't trying to hold down a part-time job at the same time. The work experience I gained at the time was invaluable. Experience of work through the school was only limited to one day field trips. -
