Rising Tension
Event- A series of events in which Korea disrespected Japan in one way or another including the poor treatment of Japanese envoyes, and Korean troops firing upon a Japanese warship 'on accident'
Cause- Japan had been consistantly pushing, along with other countries, to 'open up' Korea to trade.
Effect- Nearly led to Japan invading Korea in 1873
Significance- I think that if these incidents nearly led to an invasion, then they must have been very big issues, and with long lasting influences. -
Kapsin Coup
Event- Kim Ok-kyun and followers (for japanese) captured the royal palace and summoned 200 Japanese troops to defend them. Coup was only maintained for about a day until 1500 Chinese came and quickly removed the rebels and japanese forces.
Cause- Japan wanted to attempt reform in Korea through internal conflict.
Effect- led to Korea paying for Japanese losses while Chinese took soldiers out of Korea and Japan started building them up on the sidelines.
Sig.- Convinced the Japanese that (cont.) -
Kapsin Coup Cont.
Significance- convinced the Japanese that they would have to reform Korea through external conflict or " Strong-arm tactics "
And increased the tension between the Chinese and Japanese eventually contributing to the cause of the Sino-Japanese war -
Sino-Japanese War Cont.
Effect- Removed Chinese from Korea and was the last move made by Japan to dominate Korea. Significance- Established Japanese Dominance over China for a period, showed how developed Japan had become. -
Sino-Japanese War Begins
Event- First Sino-Japanese war. A short but important war for the Japanese who quickly smashed the Chinese military in a brilliant display of military strength. Cause- Chinese forces were sent to korea in response to an appeal for aid from King Kojong. The Chinese informed the Japanese of their movement (because of a prior agreement) and so the Japanese moved forces into korea as well, and proceded to destroy the Chinese fleet without declaration of war.
Effect- Removed the Chinese from Korea -
Assassination of Queen Min
Event- The brutal assassination of Queen Min was carried out by a group of Japanese residents and soldiers. She was stabbed many times, and then burned alive to get rid of the evidence.
Cause- Queen Min was working hard to get Japan out of Korea. It was working for a while, which pushed the Japanese to remove her.
Effect- After, Japan built back up its forces and returned its people to their positions of power within Korea. -
Queen Min's Assassination
Significance- Though it raised much alarm around the world and sparked many small attacks, this took the last major Korean threat to Japan's dominance out of the picture.
