    Cyrus McCormick was born on February 15, 1809.He was born on a farm in the valley of Virginia, 18 miles away from Lexington.Cyruss' dad was Robert McCormick. Cyrus was fascinated by machinery and he was skilled on the forge.

    When Cyrus was 15 he invented a lightweight cradle for carting harvested grain. In 1834 a patent was issued to Cyrus McCormick as the inventor of the mechanical reaper.Cyrus had a company to sell reapers and they sold 54,841 machines.Cyrus McCormick invented the reaper in 1831.

    Cyrus McCormick died on May 13, 1884 in Chicago, Illinois.He had been handicaped the last four years of his life because of a stroke which gave him paralysis of his legs. He was buried in the Graceland Cemetery. He gave his son Cyrus McCormick Jr. his company.
