Creating the Walkman
During this year engineer Nobutoshi Kihara at Sony concieved the idea of a portable music player consisting of a playback device along with headphones therefore creating the first prototype of the Walkman. -
Introducing the Sony Walkman TPS-L2
In this year the first Walkman was introduced. This Walkman played cassette tapes and was listened to through headphones. It was fist released in Japan becoming a great success with all stock selling out in its first three months. -
The Discman
After the evolution of the CD or Disc, Sony releases the Diskman, similar o the Walkman but plays CD's rather than Cassettes. In 1999 the name was changed to CD-Walkman -
Sony Walkman WM-101
This new and improved Walkman was slightly thinner and introduced the rechargable batteries. -
Digital Audio
Sony introduced the digital audio tapes or DAT as they were known, creating a huge move forward from the original cassette player -
Sony TCD-D3
In 1990 the DAT Sony music player was released with new features of recording as well as playing music. -
Sony Walkman MZ-1
In this year Sony created a new music format player known as the Mini Disc or MD, replaing the Cassette tape. -
CD-Walkman
The Discman was reinvented and the given the name CD-Walkman. -
Introducing the IPod
The first IPod is released with 4.2mb of internal storage space holding 1000 songs. -
ITunes
Apple releases ITunes online music store with the choice through 200, 000 songs all at the cost of 99¢ each.
At this time the third generation IPod is also released with a higher storage space of 7, 500 songs. -
Flash Memory
During the early 2000's Sony begins experiementing with memory cards as a source of music storage. In 2003 Sony releases the Walkman NW-MS700 with built in memory as well as memory cards for storage. -
International music
ITunes is released internationally after success in America. ITunes reaches out to places such as Germany and France -
Walkman Vs. IPod
Sony releases an mp3 player with 20GB worth of storage and 30 hours of playback. Although it had much to offer, the mp3 player was more expensive than the newly introduced IPod at nearly a third more of the price. -
IPhone
Apple introduce the first generation IPhone with touch screen abilities, ITunes and various other features including music storage. -
Sony Ericsson Walkman W200
The Sony Ericsson Phone is released with inbuilt Walkman features to allow people to listen to music from their phone in an mp3 format. -
App Store
The famous App store is launched on the same day the Iphone 3G is released allowing consumers to experience the App store on their new phone. -
IPod and new features
The new IPod touch helps launch new features such as Retina Display, FaceTime, Video Recording and Game Center, compatible with the App store.
