The Great New Orleans Fire
The city of New Orleans, Louisiana had a destructive fire that demolished over 850 buildings, 80% of the city!! There wasn't a fire department or any thing else to extinguish the fire. Most people that lived in that area were homeless afterwards. -

In a humble log cabin located in Hodgeville, Kentucky a future president was born. Abraham Lincoln was born to Nancy Hanks and Thomas Lincoln. -
Star-Spangled Banner is Made
Mary Pickersgill was contracted to make 2 flags for Fort McHenry around this time. One was a 32 by 42 feet garrison flag. The other was a 17 by 25 feet storm flag. Mary's daughter Caroline, her nieces Eliza and Magaret Young, an indentured servant named Grace Wisher and Mary's mother Rebecca Young helped Mary to create the flags. They created these flags by putting together strips of cloth about 12-18 inches wide in Mary's Baltimore home. This process took about 7 weeks. -

Battle of the Alamo
The Battle of the Alamo took place during Texas's war for independence from Mexico. 186 people died trying to defend a fort called Alamo from the Mexicans. Some of the people who died were Americans, such as Davy Crokett. -

Thre Cherokee nation was forced to move to a certain area in Oklahoma. They also had to give up their lands east of the Mississippi River. Many Cherokee people died during this journey. For that reason it is called the Trail of Tears. -

A wagon train with 1,000 settlers and 1,000 head of cattle started their journey down the Oregon Trail. They departed from Independence, Missouri hoping to have a new and better life in Oregon. -
The California Gold Rush Starts
James W. Marshall found a gold nugget while he was building a mill for John Sutter. Despite efforts to keep this find secret, it started a mad rush to California. Nearly half a million people moved to California in hopes of finding gold after a few other incidents happened later on. By the end, about 2 million dollars worth of gold was taken. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin is Written
In Cinncinati, Ohio Harriet Beecher Stow wrote a book called Uncle Tom's Cabin. It told the story of mistreated slaves. This book helped to turn more people in the North against slavery.
