Fort Sumter
The Battle of Fort Sumter took place on April 12, 1861. The Union leader was Major Robert Anderson and the Confederacy leader was General PGT Beauregard. The Confederacy won after the Union surrendered the fort. There were no casualties in this battle however this sparked a very bloody war. This battle was important because it started the Civil War between the Yankees and the Rebels. -
First Battle of Bull Run
This battle took place at Manassas, Virginia. The Union leader was General Irvin McDowell and the Confederacy leaders were General PGT Beauregard and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. The Confederacy won this battle and it was important because it was the first real battle of the war. It also changed the view of the war of how it would maybe turn out to both sides fighting. -
Battle of Shiloh
This battle took place in Mississippi where the Union leaders were General Ulysses S. Grant and William "Tecumseh" Sherman. The Confederacy leader was Genereal Beauregard once again. The Union won this battle and it was important because it helped the Union to getting closer into gaining complete control of the Mississippi River. -
Fall of New Orleans
This battle took place in Louisiana on the Mississippi River. This was a naval battle and the Union attacked the Confederacy. The leader of the Union was Captain David Farragut and the Union won the battle. This was very important beause it got the Union to have control over all of the entire Mississippi River. It also prevented the Rebels from using the port or river in order to carry goods to the sea. -
The Battle of Antietam
This battle took place in Maryland. The leader for the Union was General McClellan and the leader for the Confederacy was General Lee. The outcome of the battle was a tie and this battle was very important because the Union prevented the Rebels from making the war take place in Union territory. It also lead to Abraham Lincoln creating the Emancipation Proclamation. -
Battle of Fredericksburg
This battle took place in Virginia and the Union leader was General Ambros Burnside and the Confederacy leader was General Lee. The Confederacy won and it was important because the Rebels won again which brought up their spirits. It also prevented the Union from getting to Richmond, the capitol of the Confederacy, for a short while. -
Battle of Chancellorsville
This battle took place in Virginia. The Union leader for this battle was General Joseph Hooker and the Confederacy leaders were General Lee and General Jackson.The Confederacy won this battle. This was important because it prevented the Union from attacking the Rebel's capitol, Richmond. -
Battle of Gettysburg
the Battle of Gettysburg took place from July 1-4. However, there is a debate on whether it ended on the 3rd of July or the 4th of July. This battle took place in Pennsylvania. The leader for the Union was General Meade and the leaders for the Confederacy were General Lee and General George Pickett. The Union won this battle. This was important because the hopes from the Rebels of getting Britain and France to help them was over. This was the turning point of the war. -
The Vicksburg Siege
This siege took place in Mississippi and the Union leader was General Ulysses S. Grant and the Confederacy leaders were everyone! The Union won and this was important because it was the turning point of the war. It was also important because the Confederacy was split in two and they lost a big amount of control of the Mississippi River in the South territory. -
The Wilderness Campaign
The Wilderness Campaign battle was located between the two capitols of Richmond and Washington D.C.. These were dense forests that the Union travelled through in order to get closer to Richmond and to attack it. The Confederacy tried to stop them but the Union had the advantage and they got closer to Richmond in the end after the deadly 6 weeks in the Wilderness. This was important because the Union got to become closer to Richmond and attacking it. -
Farragut at Mobile Bay
David Farragut of the Union attacked on the Mississippi River in the South and charged through. The Confederacy tried to attack back, but the Union kept on going forward with their 18 ships that they had. This was an important battle because it got the Union the last port in the South that was east of the Mississippi River. -
Sherman's March to the Sea
In Sherman's March to the Sea, William T. Sherman of the Union wanted to break the confidence of the South by destroying everything in his path along the South. He burned cities and farmlands all the way from Georgia to the Atlantic coast. He also destroyed things that oculd be useful to the South such as food, livestock, fields, and railroads. Along this month long journey until December 21, 1864, he and his troops freed lots of slaves. All of these hurt the South and benefited the North. -
Fall of Richmond/Surrender at Appomattox
On April 2, 1865 the Union moved forward towards Richmond and the Confederacy troops and Lee retreated. Jefferson Davis got news of what had happened and immediately started destorying Richmond. He also fled the city with his cabinet members. Lincoln arrived at the burning Richmond with his son and he sat in JD's chair and smiled. The Union had won the war. However, Lee kept on fighting but when a final train was captured, Lee surrendered to Grant. At the Appomattox Courthouse in Viginia Grant-- -
Fall of Richmond/Surrender at Appomattox
--told Lee that his troops could keep their weapons, the officers could keep their horses, no soldiers would be disturbed on the way back home, and Grant would give Lee 25,000 rations to the Confederate troops. Lee surrendered under those conditions and the Civil War against the Yankees and Rebels was finally over on April 9, 1865.
