In 1803, Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana Purchase. After the purchase, he wanted to explore and map the new territory. The Corps of Discovery was the selected group of Army volunteers to travel. The group was commanded by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Also, he wanted to find a route to the western half of the continent so he could establish an American presence. This is so no other countries can try to claim the territory. -

The War of 1812 was one of the first wars of the United States. The war occurred to pressure the British into stopping their impressment of US sailors and to stop the British support of Native Americans who were attacking the US. -
The First Successful Steam Engine
The first successful steam engine was designed by George Stephenson in 1814. This invention was definitely useful later on. -
Treaty of Ghent
The Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812. -

Battle of Fort Sumter
The South Carolina government decided to bombard the fort. South Carolina wanted the fort to be theirs, so they made the U.S. Army evacuate and ended up starting the Civil War. -

Virginia Secedes
After the fort incident, Virginia seceded from the Union. Within weeks, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina did too. At this point, eleven states made up the confederacy. -
Lincoln Proclamation
Abraham Lincoln called forth state militias to suppress the Confederate's rebellion. -
First Battle of Bull Run
This battle was the first major battle of the Civil War. The Confederates won. -
Battle of Shiloh
The Battle of Shiloh was a two day battle. This is the first battle in the Civil War to see as much bloodshed as happened at Shiloh. Union victory. -
Battle of Antietam
During this battle, General Lee hoped to force the Union to give up on the war by defeating the North on northern soil. The Union won. This battle witnessed the most bloodshed in a single day. -
Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln and stated that all slaves held within the Confederate states are free. -
The Draft Act of 1863
The US Congress enacted the draft to men of ages 20-45. These men had to serve in the war. Others could pay $300 or provide a substitute if they didn't want to draft. -
Civil War Ends
After much loss, the war ends. -
Thirteenth Amendment
The Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery. -
Lincoln is Assassinated
While watching a play with his wife, John Wilkes Booth shoots Lincoln in the head. -
