  • Sand Creek Massacre

    Sand Creek Massacre
    The Sand Creek Massacre was between the U.S. Army led by Colonel John M. Chivington and the Cheyenne led by chief Black Kettle in Colorado. The Cheyenne were raiding nearby ranches, then offered peace and went back to their reservation. The Army fired on the Cheyenne killing 150 people. Many Americans were outraged by this event.
  • Medicine Lodge Treaty

    Medicine Lodge Treaty
    Many Indian tribes, like the Cheyenne, continued with raids. The U.S. issued the Medicine Lodge Treaty making the tribes sign it. In this treaty many of the Indians were moved on to reservations in the Oklahoma area.
  • 2nd Treaty of Ft. Laramie

    2nd Treaty of Ft. Laramie
    The Sioux attacked a supply wagon train, which was passing on the Bozeman Trail on Sioux hunting grounds. The Sioux killed a group of about 80 soldiers. Then the government closed the trail and signed a peace treaty with the Sioux. The Sioux agreed to go to a reservation on the Mississippi River.

    Battle of Palo Duro Canyon
    This battle happened in the Texas Panhandle involving the Comanches, Cheyennes, and Kiowas Indians. They were making camps for the up coming winter. Colonel Ranald Mckenzie caught this Indians and his men killed about 1000 Indian Ponies. They also distroyed food sources for the Indians. Left with nothing the Indians moved onto the reservation in Indian Territory.

    Battle of the Little Bighorn
    The U.S. orded the Lakota Sioux Indians to go back to there reservation. Colonel George Custer led his troops to attack the Indians near the Little Bighorn River. The Indians had more numbers than that of the military, thus Custers troops were surrounded and killed .
  • The Relocation of the Nez Perce

    The Relocation of the Nez Perce
    The Nez Perce tribe was moved on to a reservation in the Oregon and Idaho region. People from all over headed to the region in search of gold and the government then started to cut back land for the Nez Perce reservation. Many conflicts arrived between indians and settlers, moving the the tribe, led by Chief Joseph, to the Canadian border of the U.S. The tribe surrendered to the Army and were relocated in Oklahoma.

    Capture of Geronimo
    Soldiers forced more and more Indians onto reservations. One tribe they forced was the Apache. Geronimo (the Apache leader) ran away form the reservation along with others. Geronimo was a pest, and led raids near the Arizona and Mexico border. He was finally captured after years of leading raids and sent to an internment camp.

    Wovoka a Native American had a vision that told him to bring the Indians to do a sacred dance, known as the Ghost Dance. The dance went on for 5 nights. With the dance people saw visions of buffalo returning to the Plains and the white people leaving. The Ghost Dance brought hope for many.
  • Wounded Knee Massacre

    Wounded Knee Massacre
    Colonel Forsyth ordered the Sioux to give up there guns. Black Coyote did not want to give his up, and in a fight with a soldier the gun went off. This started what would be the Wounded Knee Massacre. 300 Sioux people died in this battle, many Americans were upset about this. But some soldiers received the Metal of Honor for what they did.
