Cuban Exiles
The CIA was allowed to train cuban exiles and prepare them to invade cuba. They did this in secret. The US wanted to overthrow Castro. Kennady learned of this plan just 9 days after he was in office, even though he had some second thoughts about it he gave it his approval. -
Cuban Invasion
Approx. 1500 cuban exiles landed on Cuba though the Bay of Pigs. The air strike that the US hoped would knock out the Cuban Air Force had failed. While small groups that were sent to distract Cuban forces never reached land. This embarrassed the US while letting the Cubans laugh at them. -
Soviet Weapons in Cuba
During the summer of 1962 the number of weapons sent from the Soviet Untion increased. This included Nuclear Warheads. This made the US very tentative towards Cuba. President Kennady warned Cuba that the US would not tolerate Nuclear Missiles in Cuba. -
Missile Sites
Kennady sent a message that america will not allow Cuba to have Nuclear Missiles ready to fire. US spy planes took pictures in cuban missile sites. Some had missiles ready to launch. They could hit US cities in minutes. Kennady said that if any missiles were fired their would be an all out attack on Cuba. -
Kennady Addresses the US
Kennady addressed the nation and told them of the missile sites in Cuba. He then told them of his plans to remove them. He stated that if Cuba fired a Missile that their would be an all out attack on their nation and the Soviets. After he addressed the nation, Americans were in fear of a Nuclear war in the Atlantic. -
Quarantine
To keep soviet ships from bringing in supplies to Cuba President Kennady set up a Quarantine, or more of a blockade to keep thier ships from entering. This was effective and no more ships entered but thier was no need because the missiles were installed. This rose the tension beween the Soviets and the United States. -
Soviet Ships come to a halt
Soviet Ships were on their way to Cuba with more missiles. This was happening while the US Navy was getting ready to quarantie Cuba. All of a Sudden the Soviet ships stopped in order to prevent a war at sea. This led to the agreement between the Soviet Union and the United States. -
Missile Crisis comes to a close
Kennedy and Khrushchev made an agreement incolcing the missiles. Khrushchev ordered the romoval of the missiles from Cuba. Then the United States agreed not to invade Cuba and to remove the missiles from Turkey. This created peace between the Soviet Union and the United States
