  • Declaring of the Republic of Vietnam

    Vietnam declares its independence from France. They claimed everyone was equal. This occurred right after WW2. France then declared war and killed a lot of people. Viet Minh launched an attack back in response and France suffered a major defeat.
  • Battle of Dien Bien Phu

    Big defeat for France and was an intense battle. Consisted of a struggle between France and Viet Minh. Took place in the town of Dien Bien Phu. The French were too confident in their position and lost. They were taken by surprise by Viet Minh Gen.
  • Creation of the 17th parallel between North and South Vietnam

    Border created that seperated North and South Korea. Most people traveled to South Korea. This led to a war between the 2. US took South Korea's side. The war finally ended in 1975.
  • Establishment of the National Liberation Front

    Formed to overthrow the South Vietnamese government. An overtly communist party was established as a central component. NLF did not establish a provisional government. NLF then joined the communist party. Both included non-communists though.
  • Operation Rolling Thunder

    Code name for American bombing. President LBJ expanded American air operations August, 1964. Hoped that the bombing would encourage the North to accept the South.
  • US combat troops arrive in Vietnam

    543,000 troops were stationed. Conflict resulted in 58,279 US personnel deaths. An estimated 610,000 Vietnam vets are still alive.
  • Tet Offensive

    Major escalation and one of the largest war campaigns. It was a surprise attack against the South Vietnamese. Created to trigger political instability.
  • My Lai Massacre

    American troops invaded a small village. Ended up killing 347 to 504 unarmed people. Victims were men, women, and children.
  • 1968 Democratic National Convention

    LBJ announced he would not run for president. Party was held to select a new nominee. Protests began instantly.
  • 1968 Presidential Election

    LBJ's term expired January 20th, 1969. Richard Nixon won the election. He defeated democrat Hubert Humphrey.
  • Tinker v. Des Moines

    Students wore black arm bands to protest the war. School banned the arm bands. Tinker sued the school and won since it violated the first amendment.
  • Woodstock 1969

    Huge music concert for hippies. Large amounts of marijuana was consumed. Concert was held on farm land with 400,000 people.
  • Kent State University Protest

    Students began protesting the bombings. Ohio National guard fired on the students as they began protesting. They also used tear gas.
  • Jackson State College Protest

    Students protested the invasion of Cambodia. Police opened fire shortly after. Students began throwing rocks at white motorists.
  • Pentagon Papers

    Daniel Ellsberg leaked the papers for the public to see. It contained reports about the war and how many people died. Daniel wanted the public to see what was actually going on in the world.
  • Watergate

    It is believed that Nixon hired burglars to steal and destroy evidence that would make it harder for him to get elected. Nixon ended up resigning as president. He was not punished at all.
  • 1973 Paris Peace Accords

    The US withdrew its troops from Vietnam and a cease fire order was made. North Vietnam released its war prisons to be sent back to the US. US bases had to be dismantled in 60 days.
  • United States vs. Nixon

    Some white house members were charged with conspiracy to defraud the US. Nixon was never punished because of the new president. The burglars were also charged though.
  • Fall of Saigon

    The Saigon base was invaded by North Vietnam because they wanted to see if they would bomb them. This went against the peace treaty put in place. The US did nothing in response but try and remove their troops.
  • Creation of the democratic republic of Vietnam

    In 1976 this agreement left North Vietnam in control of the Northern half of the country. Nearly one million people migrated from the north to south. The United states back up South Vietnam when they decided to go to war. This permanetely seperated North and South Korea. The government was always more strict on the North side.
