Pedro Fernandez de Quiros
Pedro Fernandez de Quiros, gains approval from King Phillip 3 of Spain, to travel to the Southern hemisphere to discover to find a "mythical" Land, to claim it for Spain. He reaches a large island at the time called, Vanuatu. He thinks it is part of the southern contenent and names it "The Austrian Land of the Holy Spirit" as respect for King Phillips Austrian hertiage.Dutchman Willem Jansz travels from modern day Indonesia to Cape York, and is the first to have contact with the Aborigionals. -
Discovery of Van Diemens Land
Anthony Van Diemen orders Abel Tasman to find and map new Holland. Abel misses Australia, and instead finds an island, which he called "Van Diemens Land". In 1856, people changed the name to "Tasmania". -
Captain Cook; First sighting of Australia
Captain Cook, was the Captain of the ship, Endeavour. this was the first Eurpean sighting of Australia. Cook waited 9 days before docking in Botany Bay. -
Captain Cook; Enters Botany Bay
He encounters local poeple and all they want is for him to leave. he charts the eastern coast of Australia, up to Cape York. He claims it for England and names it New South Wales. In the 1800's and 1900's Victoria and Queensland are separated from New South Wales. -
American Independence
The American Independence, also known as American Revolution, is when 13 colonies from North America joined together to break free from the British Empire. America was where the british sent their convicts to, but after America won the revolution they didn't want the convicts coming to their country. This is how the convicts started coming to Australia. -
Anouncement of Setttlement
King George 3, declares that they can transport convicts to Australia. What they don't know is that the Aboriginals live on this land, the British think it is theirs to take.Now people can start travelling to Australia and setting up a new life for themselves. Instead of Britian sending their convicts to America were they always had, they had to sent the convicts to Australia on ships, because America had won the revolution 10 year eariler. -
First Fleet
The First Fleet left England on 13th May 1787 and arrived at Botany Bay between 18th and 20th January 1788. There were eleven ships that left on this voyage. Over 1000 people travel to Australia to set up a British settlement in the region Captain Cook named "New South Wales. Many other people came over to Australia in the next years. -
Second Fleet
The second Fleet arrives with supplies that ended th famine, that started when a supplies ship crashed into an ice burg. 278 convicts died on the ship. The conditions on the second fleet were much worse than the conditions of the first fleet. there were many diseases and many convicts died on board. -
Australia is named Australia
Explorer Matthew Flinders, the first to cuircumnavigate the whole country, argues that it should be called Australia, the Latin term for 'the unknown southern land'. The name sticks and people start to call it Ausralia. -
Myall Creek Massacre
This massacre started when 12 local stockmen, who were mostly ex-convicts, were hunting around a town in New South Wales called Inverell, of Indigenous people of whom they thought had stolen cattle. They went to the Myall Creek Station, where another stockman had befriended a group of Indigenous people and offerd them shelter. the stockmen tied up the 28 indigenous people and were brutally beaten and killed. Several of the attckers were hanged. -
Irish Famine
The Irish Potato famine started in 1846, when potato crops started to rot.This was called "Potato Blight". People had started to die from hunger, thanks to the soaring price in food. People had to watch their loved ones die. Many fleed Ireland to places such as America and Australia. Many children were taken to worked houses after their parents had died, then shipped overseas and used as slaves. -
Gold Rush
Edward Hammond Hargraves discovered payable gold near Bathurst, New South Wales. Six months later it was found in Ballarat, Bendigo and Warrandyte. the gold rush attracted many people from all over the world. People packed up their lives and traveled to Victoria, Australia, for the chance to find their fortune. Some people were lucky and struck gold but many were unlucky and didn't find any. Live was hard on the gold fields and you had to have a lisence to dig for gold. -
Eureka Stockade
A fierce dawn battle was fought on the Ballarat goldfields, between diggers and police troopers. The battle only lasted about 20 minutes. The troopers suprise attacked the diggers early in the morning and only 30 diggers were injured and 25 killed. Only 3 troopers were killed. The troopers had a great supply of weapons and guns and the diggers only had limited resources. -
Federation
The Federation of Australia was when six seperate British colonies, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia, became one. They kept their laws they had as a single colony, but also had a Federal Government, who was responsible for matters that influenced the whole country. This was the start of Australia! -
World War 1
World War 1 or the Great War, started in 1914 and went for a little over four years. There were 6 main countries involved in the War. Australia was not one of the main countrys but was still involved. The main countrys were the United Kingdom, France and Canada against Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. Italy didn't get involved, but then fought against Germany and Austria-Hungary. Australia was on the British side along with France and Canada.
