Christopher Colombus visits the area and calls it costa rica.But because of diseases people didn't settle their for 60 years. Costa Rica was named after rich cost.

Part of Spain

1540

Costa Rica became apart of Spain. The population started to grow faster.

Coffee

1808

Coffee gets introduced bye Cuba. Coffee becomes the principle crop in Costa Rica. Everyone was drinking coffee.

Indapendance

1821

Central America gains independence from Spain. Costa Ricans were thinking if Costa Rica should be apart of independent Mexico or a configuration of Central American states.

Leadership

1850

Under the leadership of Juan Rafael Mora Costa Rica takes the lead on organizing central America resistance against William Walker.
The Us adventurer who took over Nicaragua in 1855.

Bad president

1917

Frederico Tinoco ousts the elected president Alfredo Gonzalez. But 2 years later he stopped being president. A lot of people hated him.

Civil War

1948

Six-week civil war over a disputed presidential election result. A lot of people were killed and harmed because of the president that was elected.

Voting

1949

New constitution gives women and people of African have the right to vote. Armed forces removed and replaced by civil guard. Jose Figueres Ferrer, co-founder of National Liberation Party elected president and begins Jose Figueres Ferrer, co-founder of National Liberation Party, elected president and begins ambitious socialist programme.

Luis Alberto Monge elected president and introduces harsh austerity programme .Meanwhile, Costa Rica comes under pressure from the US to weigh in against the Sandinistas in Nicaragua.

Energy and telecommunications workers strike over President Pacheco's privatisation plans. Teachers strike over problems in paying their salaries. Strikes prompt three ministers to resign.
