Sectionalism
After the War of 1812, America was feeling a lot of nationalism, that nationalism soon became sectionalism. In America, sectionalism was the division of the North and South. Sectionalism started in America because of the different economic interests. In the North we were all about industrialization and manufacturing and the South was all about agriculture and farming. Since the south was all about farming they needed slaves to thrive and we didn't. this was another example of sectionalism. -
Kansas-Nebraska
In the Kansas-Nebraska act, Congress unfairly went against the Missouri compromise and made the Kansas and Nebraska territories open to popular sovereignty when in the Missouri act they said that the Kansas and Nebraska territories were supposed to be free states. This was the cause of bleeding Kansas because a lot of people from the north went into Kansas to vote for freedom and a lot of people from the south went into Kansas to vote for slavery and they fought. -
Dred Scott decision
Dred Scott was born a slave, and lived in Virginia. Later Scott was sold to another man. The next owner, a doctor, took Scott to Illinois. In this state, it was against the law to own slaves. The doctor and Dred Scott lived there for three years then the doctor returned to Missouri, bringing Scott with him. Dred Scott went to court with the case of whether he would became free when he entered the free states or not. But in the end he was declared a slave even though he lived in a free state. -
John Brown & the Raid in Harper’s Ferry, Virginia
John Brown was a hero, a good man and a radical abolitionist who believed in the violent overthrow of the slavery system. During the Bleeding Kansas conflicts, Brown and his sons led attacks on pro-slavery residents murdering five proslavery settlers. John Brown made a small "army" of 21 people into Harpers Ferry. His plan was to steal weapons and give them to the slaves to start a slave uprising. Sadly, John Brown was caught in battle. Then the terrible pro-slavery people hanged him. -
Election of 1860
In the Election of 1860, we wanted Abraham Lincoln for president and the South wanted Breckenridge. Lincoln was against slavery so that is why we were voting for him, Breckenridge wanted slavery. There was a lot of tension between us and the South on who the next president was going to be. It caused more sectionalism and opposition. Abraham Lincoln eventually won the election, which pleased us, but made the South angry and unhappy. -
Fort Sumter
At Fort Sumter was a military base for the union located in South Carolina. The Confederacy was surrounding the base so Robert Anderson, the general of Fort Sumter asked Abraham Lincoln for supplies. Abraham Lincoln had three choices. He could send provisions , attack the confederate, or order them to leave the base. He decided to send provisions. The confederacy general took this as a threat and ordered his men to fire at us. This started the civil war.
