Signed by Abraham Lincoln. This encouraged migration by providing settlers with 160 acres of land. -
Discoveries of Gold & Silver
Gold & Silver was discovered in 1864 in Silver Bow Creek. Once discovered, people began to settle in the area. -
"Long Drive" to "Cattle Ranching"
20 million cattle were herded from Texas. They were driven as far as 25 miles a day! -
Transcontinental Railroad System
By the 1850's there was around 9,000 miles of track laid down east of the Missouri River. Native Americans started to attack the workers building the track. -
Barbed Wire
Submitted by Joseph Glidden in 1873. He was not the first one to think of this idea, but he did format the wire. -
Growth of New Towns
"Mineral Revolution". The growth of new towns supported cattle, mining, and farming by expanding their land for more space for cattle and farming, and more areas to search to mine. -
Jesse James
Jesse James was born on September 5, 1847. He was a bank and train robber. He came from a prestigious family of farmers. -
Wild West Shows
Cowboys and Indians race cattle and buffalo. Outlaws and Lawmen face one another on dusty streets. -
Dawes Act
President Grover Cleveland signed the Dawes Act to split up the Native American's land in 1887. This divided the land equally for each Indian man. It gave each man 160 acres of land for farming. -
Extinction of Buffalo
Also called the buffalo "gold rush", they were extinct by the 1890's. The result of them becoming extinct was starvation, and high infant mortality amongst the Indians.
