South Africa Before Imperialism
There were various native groups that lived in South Africa. Some were Khoikhol and the San. They spoke various languages and some were hunters or farmers. -
Dutch East India Company
Portugese made settlements along the southern coast of Africa. The Dutch East India Company created a sea port at the CAPE of Good Hope. They came to control the spice trade and make money. -
Britain Invades
Britain sees the resources of diamond and gold in South Africa. Britain takes over South Africa, pushing away the Boers( Dutch settlers) out of South Africa. Meanwhile the Zulus, the native group fought Britain but eventually lost. Many Africans died of diseases. -
The Boer War and The Great Trek
The Boers were unhappy with Britain invading South Africa. They proposed war against Britain, the Boers fought but fled up north which became known as the Great Trek. -
South Africa Involved in WWI
South Africa was brought into the war to fight against a German protectorate for Britain, also fight against France. -
The South African National Trust Company
A credit institution and life insurance business built for only Afrikaners. There were also many African organizations made to celebrate their culture, including the Broederbond. -
Conflict in South Africa
White and black miners in South Africa disagreed in political affairs. The white workers were soon being replaced by black workers. The mine owners did this to cut the wages by getting rid of semi or unskilled white workers. -
The Industrial Conciliation Act
The act paid favor to white workers, changing the color bar in the working enviroment.
