Conflict first started to escalate when Motubu came to power in Zaire in 1965. Motubu was a harsh leader and many people struggled in poverty. People started trying to resist his rule and formed a rebel group for security in the eastern provinces. -

Rwandan Genocide
On April 6th 1994 in Rawanda, Africa the Hutu group started a human slaughter agaisnt the Tutsis. The Tutsis had nowhwere to go because their nation Rwanda was being attacked. They decided to fleed to Congo, Africa a near by country for saftey. The Tutsis group brought conflict to Congo which would soon be the first Congo War. There has been conflict in Congo ever since. -
Tutsis removed
Governor Jean-Pierre Kalumbo Mbogho orders all Tutsis removed from the region and calls for their extermination. Violence breaks out, claiming 14,000 lives over the next two months -
Second Congo War
The Second Congo War began soon after the First Congo War and involved many of the same issues. Eastern Congo had been unstable for a while. Kabila turned on his supporters and allowed Hutu armies to regroup in eastern Congo. -
Peace Treaty of Congo
The seven countries involved in the Second Congo War signed a peace treaty. Congo was tired of all of the confict, therefore they signed the peace treaty. After signing the treaty The Congo believed they would be done with conflcit. The Congo wanted peace and they still haven't gotten it. -
Kabila Assassinated
President Kabila was assassinated by his bodygaurd. His son, Joseph Kabila, took over. President Kabila was well liked by the Congo nation. This was a hard time for Congo and it was hard to recover and fortiy the nation once again -
Kabila Negotiated Peace
Kabila negotiated a peace deal with internal rebel groups, promising them a power-sharing interim government. This deal became official in April 2003. -
Congo Taken Advantage of
Other powerful surrounding countries of Affrica discovered the Congo's rich minerals, so they are now taking iver Congo for being a poor country. They are taking advantage of the fact that the Congo is a poor country and they know that they can take whatever they want without a fight. -
Congo Today
Rape and murder of civillians continues by multiple armed groups, including government troups, rebels, and militias. Many peacekeepers remain stationed and are unable to prevent the bloodshed.
