    Martin Van Buren, a democrat who was appointed by Andrew Jackson, won the election against several whig candidates. He was a good president but came in at the wrong time and got hit with finacial panic that hurt the nation and ruined his re-election.

    Calhoun believed in social classes in America. He considered slavery as a fundamental American Institution. He urged slave owners and factory owners to unite against property-less whites and the working class of enslaved blacks

    The Wilmont Proviso
    The Wilmont Proviso was proposed by David Wilmont close to the end of the Mexican-American War. It was designed to eliminate slavery within the land acquired as a result of the Mexican-American War. It was never passed by Congress. It made the North and the South even more mad at each other.

    The Compromise of 1850 happened because of the Wilmont Proviso. It was created by Henry Clay and Stephen Douglas, which proposed stopping the expansion of slavery, and strengthened the Fugitive Slave Acts. The Compromise helped the North and South to actually agree on something and paused the conflict.

    The Republican Party was founded specifically to stop slavery. When the first republican President, James Buchanan was elected in 1860, the southern sates thought he would end the southern culture and society.

    The Kansas Nebraska Act sort of gave both the North and South something. The North go the Transcontinental Rail Road from Chicago to San Francisco. The South liked that Kansas and Nebraskan territories allowed popular sovereignty which gave the population the choice on if slavery was okay or not okay. This act repealed the Missouri Compromise and split the two even farther apart
  • Dred Scott v. Sandford

    Dred Scott v. Sandford
    Dred Scott was a slave from Missouri. He stayed with his master in Illinois, a free state, from 1833-1843. When his master died, He sued for his and his family's freedom, saying that because they were in a free state and they had no master that that made them free. They never won their freedom because Chief Justice, Roger Taney ruled against them 7-2.

    These debates were a series of seven debates between the two. They were significant because of what was discussed. The main issue discussed in all seven debates was slavery.

    This was very important because Lincoln wanted slavery gone. When he was elected, most of the Deep South seceded from the Union. The seceded states called themselves The Confederate States of America. This was a big factor in the Civil war.
