This was declared after the British left Palestine. It was declared by David Ben-Gurion and other Jewish leaders. -
Start of first Arab-Israeli War
Began the day after Israel declared its independence. Armies from Arab countries of Egypt, Syria, Transjordan, and Iraq invaded Israel. Arab armies were defeated. -
Six-Day War
Israeli troops on the ground moved in and defeated Arab troops. They took over Golan Heights, Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, and East Jerusalem. The land they took over had a large Palestine population. -
Yom Kippur War
This began with a surprise attack from Egypt and Syria to win back their territory. Arab forces made progress due to lack of Israeli preparation until the US sent troops and together they pushed back. A cease fire was called after weeks of fighting. -
Camp David Accords
US president Carter invited the Egyptian president and Israeli prime minister to a presidential retreat in attempts to make amends. There the reached a peace agreement called the Camp David Accords. In the agreement Egypt recognized Israel, and Israel gave back the Sinai Peninsula.
