    • In the 1860s, there was a civil war between the northern and southern states of America
    • BNA were supporting the southern states and the northern were believing in Manifest Destiny
    • When the Civil war ended in 1865, the BNA thought that the Americans would take over the western side of BNA since the Americans had already taken lands from Spain, Mexico or France

    • In the 1860s, many colonies had their own railway such as New Brunswick, Nova Scotia
    • They wanted an intercolonial railway to move troops faster (in case there was a war) or to increase trade
    • But BNA put railway building to a stop due to many railway structural failures like the Grand Trunk Railway which was bankrupt or the Great Western Railway which also had some financial difficulties

    • During mid-1860s, Great Britain had wanted the colonies in North America to be more sufficient meaning that they would benefit more to GB
    • In 1846, the corn laws were repealed so mercantilism couldn’t happen anymore, but some people in GB still thought the colonies had many sources of food or goods
    • In the end, they encourage confederation that way the colonies could be more beneficial and self-sufficient by government, railways, or troops

    • The Charlottetown Conference was made to have delegates form a United Province Of Canada
    • They discussed Maritime union
    • They wanted to make four colonies and three from the Atlantic called Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island

    • The Quebec Conference had a list called Seventy-Two resolutions based on the Union’s government
    • Newfoundland had not attended the Conference because they believed they weren’t interested
    • United Province of Canada would be split on the middle between Ontario and Quebec

    • In 1865, the Reciprocity treaty was cancelled and ended free trade between British North America and the United States
    • The treaty was designed for free trade between BNA and US without paying high tariffs on goods
    • People from BNA wanted to join together so they could continue free trade

    • The London Conference was about delegates presenting the Seventy-two resolutions to the British
    • It was the last conference to create the Dominion of Canada on July 1st, 1867
    • They would soon build an intercolonial railway

    • During the late 1860s, supplies from Canada west were running low
    • They wanted to expand out into the western areas like Rupert’s Land and the North-West Territories
    • The problem was that the Americans had the same idea as to possible settlement expansion areas
